Destination Berlin: Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin

Destination Berlin: Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin Ph. Juri Signorini

The scene of one of the hottest moments of the Cold War, Checkpoint Charlie was one of the places of passage between East Berlin and West Berlin, armored and controlled by the US military, built in the section of wall at the confluence of two of the main arteries of the city: between Friedrichstraße and Zimmerstraße.

It was here that on October 25, 1961 armed Soviet and American tanks lined up in front of the other ones, in an action of force ended in favor of American troops who secured the right to move freely around Berlin. With the split of the city in two, it was necessary to ensure that no inhabitant of the GDR tried to go to the West, therefore different checkpoints were installed which are named after the NATO phonetic alphabet: Checkpoint Alpha separated East Germany from West Germany; Checkpoint Bravo separated East Germany from West Berlin and Checkpoint Charlie, the third in the order, had the daunting task of monitoring the border between Americans and Soviets.

With the wall, it was dismantled also the Checkpoint Charlie, and what we see today is a reproduction made in 2000, with the suggestive posters of two soldiers: an American with an eye toward a Soviet East Berlin and looking towards the West zone, and the famous sign announcing "you're leaving the American sector."

You can also visit the museum "House at Checkpoint Charlie", where is set up a permanent exhibition on the history of the Wall and are exposed the most weird objects used for the most amazing escape attempts of the inhabitants of East Berlin.

Juri

Born in Riccione, a seaside town on the Italian coast of the Adriatic Sea. Of Italian father and a Russian mother, I always define myself a crossroads of cultures, in fact I never identified with a nationality, considering myself a real world citizen.
From the early years of life I've traveled, living periods of time abroad, experiences that have further increased my openness towards the new and the different, and the ability to think outside the box.
I'm graduated Expert for Tourism, and continued hmy studies with a Masters Degree in Economics and Management. During and after the studies, I had a multitude of different jobs, mostly oriented towards tourism (my true passion, together with art and opera). Since 2008 I lives in Milan, working in the finance department of an Italian multinational company.
My passion for culture, led me to found in 2013, Kitabu, a publishing house specializing in the publication of books in electronic format, with which in 2015 I launched various projects regarding web-based magazines about different cultural and leisure themes, on of wich is TravelTv.
Despite the many commitments, however, I've never stopped traveling extensively the world, trying in every place to identify myself with the local population.
